Breakout Sessions
Re-imagining Discipleship
Jesus invited a couple of brothers who were small business owners to “follow me.” They did. It was risky and rewarding. To follow Jesus meant a reorientation of their identity, their religiosity, and their energy. The COVID-19 pandemic is giving us the opportunity to reimagine what it means to follow Jesus when programs are not possible, community is dependent on technology, and social expectations are shifting. How has the pandemic changed your thoughts and plans and behavior as a leader of other Christ-followers?
Facilitated by Dr. Rick Jordan, President of Great Bible Teachers and a Barnabas Partner, Lewisville, NC
Re-imagining Worship: Where do we go from here?
As our worshipping communities continue to navigate uncertain times, we will cover the basics of forming a hybrid approach to worship that is inclusive and participatory for in-person and online audiences. We will also discuss a model for selecting diverse music for worship that allows our communities to express who we are and who we ant to be.
Facilitated by Dr. Christian McIvor, Minister of Worship, Music, and the Arts; Greystone Baptist Church; Raleigh, NC
Re-imagining Community: Tough Conversations
How to Have Them in Church and Keep Talking to Each Other
We’ve all experienced it, haven’t we? A casual conversation that turns cold when an idea or bias is challenged. An angry email over a hot-button topic. The church member who’s been distant ever since they agreed to disagree with you. While we know we should talk about difficult topics like racism or mental health, often we don’t know how. Our avoidance of tough conversations comes with a cost, though—to us, our churches, and our communities. Those who most need to experience the love of God in our midst can feel left out.
Come explore alongside pastor and author, Elizabeth Hagan on how you can have difficult conversations in your congregation and thrive through them! You will leave with practical tools you can go home and apply in your context right way about what to say, what intentions are necessary and how you can get the support of the congregation at large.
Facilitated by Rev. Elizabeth Hagan, Minister; First Christian Church, Athens, GA
